Find answers to common questions about working with foundation relations.

What kinds of projects can OCFR assist with?
We are happy to learn about your research or program and offer a realistic assessment of its funding potential. OCFR supports a wide range of initiatives, from basic science to student-centered programs.

What are foundations, and what do they fund?
Foundations are nonprofit organizations that advance charitable causes through grantmaking. In 2023, private foundations gave over $103 billion, nearly 20% of all philanthropic giving. They fund everything from research and capital projects to scholarships and campus-wide initiatives.

What if a foundation doesn’t accept unsolicited proposals?
That’s common. It means your strategy should focus on relationship building. OCFR can help you connect with program officers, past grantees or collaborators to explore pathways forward.

How long does it take to get a foundation grant?
It varies. While some foundations review proposals within a few months, positioning your project for success can take much longer – often several months or even years.

What is a 990 form?
A 990 is a foundation’s tax return. It includes financial data, leadership information and a complete list of grants made during a particular year. Video: Learn more from GuideStar about the 990 form.

Do you have established relationships with foundations?
Yes. We maintain direct relationships with many of the university’s top foundation donors. We can provide assistance in a variety of ways:

  • Share insights about Rice’s relationship with the foundation.
  • Connect you with faculty who have previously worked with the foundation.
  • Help you strategize the best path forward.

Are any foundations “off limits”?
Some foundations require coordinated outreach:
The Moody Foundation
W.M. Keck Foundation
Elkins Foundation
Cullen Foundation
Contact OCFR before reaching out to these funders.

Some foundations limit the number of proposal Rice can submit, and OCFR coordinates internal competitions for these opportunities. Examples include:

  • Packard Foundation
  • Kleberg Foundation

Will OCFR write my proposal?
In rare cases, yes — but typically we encourage the subject matter expert (that’s you) to write the first draft. We can work closely with you to shape your approach, ensure alignment with guidelines and provide editing support.

What’s the best way to get a grant?
That really depends on the foundation! Some prioritize fit with their mission. Others value long-standing relationships. OCFR can help you assess both and build a strategy that works.

Can you help with corporate giving?
Yes! For corporate funders, please contact Leah Aschmann, Director of Corporate Relations. In some cases, we partner with OCFR’s corporate relations team to support corporate foundation outreach.
